CUTTING TIES
Why Democrats Are Cutting Ties With AIPAC (The Trend Explained)

SPREAD THE MESSAGE!!!!

AIPAC used to be the most powerful lobby in Washington.
Now, Democrats are running away from it like it's toxic waste.
What changed? Let's break it down.

What Is AIPAC?

AIPAC stands for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. It's a pro-Israel lobbying group founded in 1954. For decades, it was considered the ultimate "kingmaker" in Washington, with the power to make or break political careers.[ Even President Obama acknowledged in his 2020 memoir that many politicians feared crossing AIPAC, as it could easily label critics as "anti-Israel" or even "antisemitic."

The Trend: Democrats Are Cutting Ties

On July 15, 2026, New York Democratic Congressman Ryan announced he would no longer accept AIPAC donations and would return the approximately $800,000 he had previously received. But he's not alone.

Other Democrats who have distanced themselves from AIPAC include:

  • Rep. McGarvey (Kentucky)[citation:1]
  • Rep. Foushee (North Carolina)[citation:1]
  • Sen. Gallego (Arizona)[citation:1]
  • Rep. Moulton (Massachusetts)[citation:1]
  • Sen. Booker (New Jersey)[citation:1]
  • Gov. Shapiro (Pennsylvania) - has said he "never accepted AIPAC's money or sought its support."

Even California Governor Gavin Newsom took a hard stance in February 2026, saying he will never accept AIPAC's political donations.

Why AIPAC Became 'Toxic'

Major outlets like The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Guardian have all used words like "toxic" and "monster" to describe AIPAC's image among Democratic voters.[citation:1]

Why? Because Democratic voters are shifting. According to a Quinnipiac University poll:

  • In October 2023, only 28% of Democrats thought the U.S. was too supportive of Israel
  • By early 2024, that number rose to 41%[citation:1]
  • By June 2026, it reached 66%

A Washington Post poll from July 2026 found that nearly 75% of Democrats want the U.S. to reduce or end military support for Israel.

Why Politicians Are Running Away

The shift is simple: AIPAC is now a political liability in Democratic primaries.

In New Jersey, an AIPAC-linked Super PAC spent $2.3 million attacking a candidate who supported conditioning military aid to Israel. The result? It backfired and helped a more pro-Palestinian progressive candidate win.

The Washington Post detailed how even being rumored to have AIPAC support can sink a campaign. In Pennsylvania's 3rd District primary, a candidate lost largely because voters believed—incorrectly—that she had AIPAC backing.

What This Means Going Forward

According to Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post, the real story isn't that more Democrats are opposing Israel's policies—that's been happening for years. The real story is that positions that were once political risks are now political rewards.

On the same day Ryan announced he was cutting ties with AIPAC, 103 House Democrats voted to cut all U.S. military aid to Israel.[citation:1][citation:5]

SPREAD THE MESSAGE!!!!

The AIPAC era is ending.
Democrats are finally realizing that unconditional support for Israel is a losing position.
And the more voters demand accountability, the more politicians will listen.
